Hi Everyone! I have decided to fulfill a long time goal of mine to walk a half marathon. BUT, not only am I fulfilling my goal I am doing it for a good cause. I have joined Team in Training, whose mission is to obtain funding to support the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's mission and to promote fitness and a healthy lifestyle.

I have decided to do help raise funds for this society for some very good reasons. Leukemia and its blood related cancers strikes 107,900 Americans a year, causing $60,500 deaths and Leukemia is the #1 cause of death in children between the ages 1 and 15.

I will be sponsoring my own Honored Hero who is a person stricken with a blood related cancer, in the New York area. I will get to meet this person first hand and learn their story. I am also walking for a childhood friend named Jimmy Conte who died. At the time I did not understand why he died. He was a kid just like me. He had Leukemia. We must find a cure for these terrible diseases. We cannot let anymore children die.

I will be in training for 6 months, so that I can build my stamina up to complete the 13.1 mile race. BUT, I know that the only motivation I will need is to remember that completing a 13.1 mile race is nothing compared to what my Honored Hero has gone through. My goal is to raise $4,500.00 by May 1, 2003. Please support my efforts by giving a tax deductible contribution to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. As I walk the half marathon, knowing that you contributed to make my Honored Hero's life better will motivate me to complete the race.

I would like to extend to you this offer: If you have a close friend or family member who you lost to (or who is currently battling) Leukemia or a related blood disease, in exchange for a donation, I will add their names to an honoree bracelet that I will be wearing while walking the marathon, and if you supply a wallet size photo, I will carry their picture with me from start to finish.
